Chapter 27- Together Forever

At first the days went by with excitement. We didn’t know how much longer we had and this place was a non-stop battleground. We were each gaining both levels and after that stockpiles of DKP. Then as the days turned into weeks, we started thinking about our time here on a longer term basis.

As much as I loved battle and growing stronger, I was also a dragon and dragons needed their naps. This led to a mounting frustration until Cami made a discovery. I didn’t know if I would have recognized the patterns that she did, but it became clear to her that there were factions here in the Gray Lands. The landscape and who controlled any given fort was constantly changing, but the lesser races had alliances which seemed fairly stable. At least that was her conclusion after three months of observation. If I couldn’t trust my bonded companion, then there was no one I could trust.

From there, we stopped merely hunting monsters. Oh, we’d had plenty of contact with the humans and other races. At least once every few days we were attacked by a group of their legendary tier fighters. Sometimes it was in the air, sometimes it was an ambush waiting for when we landed. None of them ever survived.

This did allow Cami the chance to gather information about the factions. She learned that they had the red, blue, black, and white factions. They were missing green obviously, but there was no accounting for the plans of the lesser races. Unfortunately, it also allowed us to fully realize one of the horrible parts of the Gray Lands. I began to think that this was devised as a hell for dragons, because whenever we slayed any of the humans or elves or whatever, all of their gear disappeared with them. There was no loot. It was a travesty.

From there it took us several more months to decide which faction to approach. We needed to be sure that we could trust any allies we were making. I was of course in favor of joining the blue faction. They should all simply bow to me as the personification of their chosen color, but Cami was right and I allowed her the opportunity to sneak into each of the factions. Her conclusion was that they were all just about the same. There were no good factions or bad factions, in fact assignment to a faction was determined by Shorishen when an individual entered the Gray Lands.

She did learn that occasionally there were traitors, but as these were worshippers of the god of war, honor and valor were priorities for all of them. Eventually, Cami felt comfortable approaching the blue faction and they of course readily accepted our help after learning that we were here for a limited amount of time. They would have been stupid not to.

What followed after that was a bit less fun than fighting the monsters, but it still earned me DKP and XP. For two months, I went on every mission they asked of me.
